Getting Enough Sleep

Sleep is an integral part of life, and making sure you get enough good quality sleep is important. Getting enough good quality sleep can help you live longer, help with weight loss, stress and much more. There is a long list of benefits both mentally and physically.

So What Is A Quality Sleep?

There is no magic number when it comes to sleep, some people need more sleep than others. A good rule is if you don't feel sleepy during the day you are getting enough, but that said napping has its own champions and benefits. A good quality sleep consists of non rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

Non Rapid Eye Movement

This consists of four stages; the first stage is light sleep where your body prepares to enter sleep. Your muscles start to relax and twitching can occur. Some people experience being in daze, half asleep and half awake. After about ten minutes you then enter the second stage of NREM sleep. This is where your breathing and heartbeat start to slow and your body temperature drops as well, this lasts for about twenty minutes. Stage three, your heart rate and breathing are at their lowest levels and your brain begins to give off delta waves. Stage four, your breathing becomes rhythmic and muscles are mostly inactive. Stages three and four, blood flow to your muscles is increased promoting growth and repair and hormones important to growth and repair are released.

Rapid Eye Movement

REM occurs roughly about ninety minutes after you have fallen asleep. The brain is highly active during this cycle, the muscles are immobilised and dreams occur. The eyes go back and forth whilst it is said that the brain is processing information and memories during this cycle. The therapies EMDR and EMI utilise this eye movement and have had very good results. When I was young I awoke during this cycle where I was effectively paralysed but only for a short time, it was a scary experience at the time. After this cycle it all starts again and people can go through the cycle on average three to five times. A good quantity and quality sleep is a major benefit to health both physically and mentally. Researchers say that there is a link between cardiovascular disease and poor sleep. Some of the benefits of a good sleep are: more energy, clearer thinking and better problem solving abilities, less stress, manage emotions better and faster healing. Sleep affects our entire body from the mind to the immune system so a good quality sleep is vital to your health and wellbeing.
